Author:  Tracy Deebs

Release Date:  May 10th, 2011

Genre:  Young Adult Paranormal Romance

Tempest Maguire wants nothing more than to surf the killer waves near her California home; continue her steady relationship with her boyfriend, Mark; and take care of her brothers and surfer dad. But Tempest is half mermaid, and as her seventeenth birthday approaches, she will have to decide whether to remain on land or give herself to the ocean like her mother. The pull of the water becomes as insistent as her attraction to Kai, a gorgeous surfer whose uncanny abilities hint at an otherworldly identity as well. And when Tempest does finally give in to the water’s temptation and enters a fantastical underwater world, she finds that a larger destiny awaits her—and that the entire ocean’s future hangs in the balance.

Summary from

My Review:  I don’t think I can remember the last time I read a book where the main focus was mermaids, well actually I don’t know if I ever have read a book focusing on mermaids.  This book, however, sounded really interesting to me, so when I had the opportunity to be part of the blog tour I was very excited.  The only thing  I knew about this book was the summary from the back cover, so I opened the book with an open mind and hoped to be wowed.

After finishing this book (in one day I might add) I can definitely say I was wowed!  I loved this world that Tracy has created and was completely lost in it.  Since I have not read anything on mermaids before all the mythology was completely new to me and it was very refreshing.  The paranormal world seems overrun with creatures that go bump in the night and it was fantastic to get a paranormal book with creatures that roam under the sea instead of lurking in the shadows.

I will say that it was a little bit of a rough start since Tempest was wallowing in self pity for a couple of chapters.  You really can’t blame the girl though, her whole life is changing and she feels she is being forced into a world she doesn’t want to be a part of.  What 17 year old do you know that would take that without a little whining?  However, once she does start to make some choices and ceratin events kick things into high gear the book is impossible to put down.

My favorite part of this book was when Tempest gets a look at what is below the ocean’s surface.  She has been surfing her whole life, but she has always been focused on staying above the waves rather than below them.  Once she does get a chance to see what has been under the waves the whole time, it is enchanting.  Tracy paints a beautiful scene of underwater life and the creatures that call it home.  The kaleidescope of colors and array of creatures leave both Tempest and the reader memorized.  I do not want to go into too much detail and ruin the effect, but it is worth the wait to see how Tempest sees life under the sea.  It made me wish I could swim down there with her and have a look around, or maybe with Kai, hmm….

Speaking of boys, I also enjoyed watching Tempest navigate her way through the two guys in her life.  You know how sometimes you have the love triangle and one guy is a total jerk so you always know the girl will end up with the nice one?  That is not the case with Tempest.  Her boyfriend, Mark, was actually a good guy.  I thought him and Tempest worked well together, but when Kai showed up, he blew Mark out of the water.  Mysterious always seems to trump nice doesn’t it?  Well, that is just what Kai is and his mystery intrigues Tempest.  Both of the guys are reasonable options for Tempest, she just has to choose which life she wants to live.  The life on land she is comfortable with:  surfing, her father, her brothers and friends or a life under the ocean full of of wonder, new adventures and an unknown destiny?  It is not an easy decision for her, but it kept me completely engrossed in her world while she tried to make it.

I am going to have to stop, because I really could just keep going with this book.  It is one I was thinking about before I went to sleep and still had churning through my brain when I woke up the next day.  I am completely fascinated by world that Tracy has created for us to explore.  Overall, Tempest Rising is an alluring world that captivated me and has kept me wanting more.  I hope there is more to come from Tempest in the future and I cannot wait to see what Tracy has in store for us next.

FTC:  I received this ARC from the publisher.
